How to Cancel GitHub Copilot and Return to Copilot Free (2026)

A personal Copilot Pro, Pro+, or Max plan is cancelled from GitHub billing settings. The paid features remain available until the billing cycle ends, then GitHub moves the account to Copilot Free.

Confirm that the plan is personal

Open GitHub Settings and check whether Copilot is billed to your personal account or supplied by an organization or enterprise.

An organization-provided seat cannot be cancelled from personal billing. Ask the organization owner to remove the seat if that is the charge you need to stop.

Open Billing and licensing

In Settings, open Billing and licensing. Choose Licensing on the new billing platform or Plans and usage on the original platform, then find the GitHub Copilot section.

Cancel the paid plan

Open Manage subscription and select Cancel subscription. Confirm the cancellation for the Copilot Pro, Pro+, or Max plan shown in the dialog.

A downgrade to another paid level is a different action. Choose Cancel subscription if the goal is to stop the paid plan entirely.

Check the effective date

Save the billing-cycle end date and the cancellation confirmation. Paid access remains until that date, after which the account is downgraded to Copilot Free.

If you enabled paid usage beyond the plan allowance, review the usage budget in billing settings as a separate check.

Does GitHub Copilot stop immediately after cancellation?
No. GitHub says the paid features remain available until the current billing cycle ends. The account then moves to Copilot Free.
Will GitHub refund unused Copilot time?
GitHub's current license-change policy says no refund is issued for unused time after a cancellation or downgrade.
Why is there no cancel button in my personal account?
The seat may belong to an organization or enterprise, or the account may have free access as an eligible student, teacher, or open-source maintainer. Those plans are not cancelled like a personal paid subscription.
Can I keep using Copilot after cancelling Pro?
GitHub automatically downgrades a cancelled personal paid plan to Copilot Free at the end of the billing cycle. Free has lower allowances and a more limited plan than the paid tiers.
